It was a sweet victory for Groton-Dunstable Girl’s Varsity lacrosse team over Shrewsbury 15-12 May 13, playing under the lights on their home field. Shrewsbury, with a 12-3 record, did not expect the tenaciousness they faced Tuesday night against the lady Crusaders.
After a tough to start their season, GD has won 9 of their last 10 games and was not ready to give up their latest winning streak to Shrewsbury, one of their biggest rivals.
Captains Liv Rubeski had five goals and two assists as well as nine draw controls, Nicki Wilkinson had four goals and an assist while Livy Penny had three big goals to kick start the game.
The half ended with an 11-6 lead for GD, and in the second half Shrewsbury came out quickly with two goals as they tried to change the score board. Goalie Maria Antonellis held them at bay with 9 saves second half to keep her team in the lead. Maria had a total of 14 saves. She had help from a very solid defense led by Senior Captain Shelly Herlihy.
The entire team came together to play their best against a very tough team to come up with a great win. Coach Sarah Valacer said, “Once we took the lead, we were able to possess the ball which is huge and shows how patient, composed and mature the girls have become over the past few weeks.”Related
