The New England Ringers, the premier handbell ensemble of the Northeast, kicks off “Nocturnal Journey,” its Spring Tour, in Groton on Saturday, May 17 at 4 p.m. at the Union Congregational Church, 218 Main Street. The New England Ringers is a 15 member handbell ensemble of highly energetic musicians from all over New England. Two of the members, Cheryl Townsend and Liz Smith, live in Groton.
Nocturnal Journey is a concert filled with beautiful music including the haunting Moon Over Ruined Castle, arranged by Kazuko Okamoto and based on a traditional Japanese tune honoring the cherry blossoms; original composition Nocturnal Fantasy by Emily Li, based on the Chinese poem “Night Thoughts,” written in the Tang Dynasty by Li Bai; and the ever popular When You Wish Upon A Star by Ned Washington and Leigh Harline.
NER amazes listeners of all ages with a blend of lively and beautiful musical moods and styles, a touch of entertaining humor, and an artful visual presentation of its unique instruments. Concert tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 per person.
Following the concert, you can stay for a spaghetti supper to benefit the church’s youth group mission trip. The supper costs an additional $8 per person or $20 per family.
