Alissa Johnson carving her way down the giant slalom course last week

The Groton-Dunstable Regional High School ski team kicked off the top of the hill and dived into the new season last week, when they participated in the first downhill ski race of the season in the Mass Bay West Alpine Ski Race League, Alpha Division, on January 7 at Nashoba Valley Ski Area. The race was a giant slalom format, writes Coach Rick Temple.

Both the Crusader Boys and Girls varsity teams placed fourth out of eight teams. The league includes Lowell, Chelmsford, Newton South, Belmont, Groton-Dunstable, Harvard-Bromfield, Westford, Acton, and Boxboro schools.

Overall, the top G-D Girls team members were: Alissa Johnson — 10th, Noelle Johnson 17th, and Katie O’Brien 20th (out of 73 girls in the league). The top G-D Boys team members were: Sam Tellier — 14th, Matthew Goulding 15th, and Bryan Heffernan 24th (out of 86 boys in the league).
