All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2014 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Sunday January 26 from 1pm – 4pm at the Peter Twomey Youth Center, located behind the Groton-Dunstable Regional Middle School North. The event is free, and entry forms will be available at the door.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually with winners progressing through local, district, and state competition. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in respective age divisions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event.
This is the 11th straight year that the Groton Knights have hosted this event. In all but one of these years, the local council has had at least one winner make it all the way to the state finals, with two of these participants being crowned State Free Throw champions.
Age Groupings and Rules
Ages 10, 11 Boys & Girls Competitions
Use a women’s regulation-size basketball and shoot from a 12-foot foul line at a 10-foot-high basket.
NOTE: The normal foul line is 15 feet from the basket. Contestants in this age group can chose to shoot from the normal foul line, and boys may use a men’s regulation size ball.
Ages 12, 13, 14 Girls Competitions
Use a women’s regulation-size basketball and shoot from the regulation foul line 15 feet from a 10-foot-high basket.
Ages 12, 13, 14 Boys Competitions
Use a men’s regulation-size basketball and shoot from the regulation foul line 15 feet from a 10-foot-high basket.
Each contestant receives three warm-up tosses followed by 15 consecutive Free Throw attempts from the appropriate age-designated foul line. To break a tie, contestants take a second round of five free throws. Successive rounds of five free throws each continue until a winner emerges.
Competitors can arrive to shoot anytime between 1pm and 4pm, and do not need to remain for the entire event. Winners will be notified after the competition.
If the next level of competition will not be held, shooters may be asked to take 25 consecutive free throws. See next section.
Council level is scheduled for January 26. Winners move onto the District competition.
District level will be held in February (held in Leominster last year). A District is made up of multiple area Knights of Columbus Councils. This competition is sometimes skipped, if no area Councils are participating (hence Council competitors may shoot 25 versus 15 Free Throws).
Regional will be held in March (held at Nichols College last year). We are in the Central Region, 1 of 5 regions in the state.
State will be held in April (rotates between East, Central, and West, held at Holy Cross last year).
