Rumors that the annual Groton Christmas tree Bonfire put on by the Groton Firefighters Association Friday evening are the reason behind the retreat of frigid Arctic air from New England were discounted by meteorologists … but after several days of single digit high temperatures early in the week, Saturday peaked with temperatures in the 50s.

In any case, more than a hundred people attended the traditional community festival on Town Field, watching as the final event of the local holiday season lit up the winter evening and ushered in a January thaw. The fundraiser for the association includes old tree pickup for a donation, and food and drink while the trees burn.
