Liz and Rebecca Brennan enjoy “Silent Night” at the Groton Christmas Tree lighting ceremony Sunday

About 30 people braved some snow and a biting wind Sunday afternoon to sing carols and light the town Christmas Tree on the common across Main Street from the Union Congregational Church.

The Groton Interfaith Council hosted the ceremony, which honored tree lighters Edie and Bert Tompkins, longtime Groton residents and enthusiastic supporters of the performing arts for children and adults. Judy Nauman, Council Secretary, presented a Christian reading; Shua Ashad, Council Vice Chair, an Islamic; Loena Novak, a Council member, an Intuir; and Amy Degen, Council member, a Jewish reading. All stressed the common ideas that all the religions shared.
