Groton Police Sergeant Jason Goodwin was seriously injured around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning when he reportedly lost control of his cruiser and crashed into a utility pole on the east side of the Main Street near the Playground Road intersection in Groton Center. Goodwin was travelling south on Main Street, pursuing a speeding car estimated to be travelling about 60 miles per hour, according to town officials.
According to Board of Selectmen Chair Peter Cunningham, Goodwin was transported to a Massachusetts General Hospital by helicopter and was reported to be in serious, stable condition with head and chest injuries this morning.
The utility pole he hit was snapped in two; tire tracks in the road were noticeable for several hundred feet before the point of impact. The vehicle Goodwin was pursuing didn’t stop.
Groton Police Chief Donald Palma was unavailable for comment this morning. Town Manager Mark Haddad did not return phone calls about the accident.
