According to church sources, Ring made the announcement at Mass one Sunday at the end of June that his last day would be end of July.
Father Michael Bova Conti has been appointed Temporary Administrator for the parish. Conti is expected to serve until a new pastor is appointed, but how long that may take is up in the air. Conti said the process to select a replacement can take two or three months and involves meetings between the parish council and other parish groups and the Archdiocese. The appointment is ultimately made by Boston Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Conti said.
A veteran of 17 year’s service in Sudbury, Conti has been tapped as a Temporary Administrator for many metro-west parishes.
Father Ring served during a difficult time period both for the Catholic Church and local parishioners. He was charged with navigating a merger of several area churches into a single viable parish. As part of the merger of St. James and St. Joseph, Sacred Heart Church in Groton center was shut down. It has been vacant for three years and on and off the real estate market. It was taken off the market with Father Ring’s departure, a spokesman for the listing realtor said.
