Johnson’s Restaurant, a Groton landmark… and home-made ice cream

The Board of Selectmen served up a change in Groton’s lunch and dinner landscape Monday evening, when they approved a “Carry In” liquor license for Johnson’s Restaurant the landmark drive in and ice cream shop on SR 119 across from the town’s golf course.

In addition to its ice cream, Johnson’s serves up hot food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now, from noon to 9:00 p.m., diners will be able to BYOB to chase their hamburgers and fried clams. The license is limited to the indoor dining room; the patio and ice cream window area are off limits to booze. Johnson’s becomes the fourth Groton restaurant allowed to permit carry in consumption, along with Filho’s Cucina, Gilson’s Herb Lyceum, and The Main Street Cafe.

Owner Richard Santiano, who bought Johnson”s in 1991 and has operated it since then, could not be reached for comment.
