The wizard’s voice will echo through the Performing Arts Center this weekend, as he chants:
“I, Gandalf, Best wizard that you’ll see,
Bid the darling spirits,
Send the band of dwarves to me.”
That’s the opening of 3Rivers Arts Youth Theatre presentation of The Hobbit this weekend at the Groton-Dunstable Regional Middle School, 344 Main Street, Groton. There will be three performances: Saturday, April 13 at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children under 12 and seniors, and may be purchased online now at www.3RiversArts.com or at the door.
As Gandalf’s words die away, the dwarves answer:
“Thirteen mighty dwarves,
Straight and strong and true.
With just one goal in view-
To slay the awful dragon Smaug.
He took our home and burned and looted,
Now he must be executed.
Thirteen mighty dwarves.”
Based on the classic tale by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit is a musical co-directed by youth theatre veteran Bonnie Marchesani and Patricia Lawrence, both of Groton, with musical direction by youth theatre founder Edie Tompkins. The Hobbit will be performed by youth aged 9 – 14 of the 3Rivers Arts Youth Theatre Senior Company. Cast members in this production hail from Groton, Dunstable, Pepperell and Lunenburg, MA. The musical, from Dramatic Publishing, was written by Ruth Perry, with music by Allan Jay Friedman, and lyrics by David Rogers.
