Groton’s Jim Mazzola is in the graduating class of Call Firefighters at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy
Four new call firefighters are joining the Groton Fire Department after completing training this month. Firefighter Jim Mazzola is graduating with Class 42 from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow and will receive his diploma from Groton Chief Joseph Bosselait on Thursday, December 20. And the Groton Fire Department’s own recruit training program is graduating three people: Firefighter Travis Gray is assigned to Center Station, and Firefighters Ben Miele and Ryan Roy and are assigned to the West Groton station.
The state fire academy class #42 had 43 students, five women and 38 men from the Ashby, Boxborough, Carlisle, Dudley, Groton, Harvard, Holden, Hopedale, Hopkinton, Littleton, Mendon, Millbury, Oxford, Princeton, Rutland, Shirley, Shrewsbury, Stow, Tyngsborough, Wareham, West Boylston, and Westminster Fire Departments.
According to Jennifer Meith, spokesperson for the state fire marshal’s office, the Call/Volunteer Firefighter Training program is unique in that it delivers a standard recruit training curriculum, meeting national standards, on nights and weekends to accommodate the schedule of firefighters in rural areas.
