
Groton’s Jim Mazzola is in the graduating class of Call Firefighters at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy
The state fire academy class #42 had 43 students, five women and 38 men from the Ashby, Boxborough, Carlisle, Dudley, Groton, Harvard, Holden, Hopedale, Hopkinton, Littleton, Mendon, Millbury, Oxford, Princeton, Rutland, Shirley, Shrewsbury, Stow, Tyngsborough, Wareham, West Boylston, and Westminster Fire Departments.
According to Jennifer Meith, spokesperson for the state fire marshal’s office, the Call/Volunteer Firefighter Training program is unique in that it delivers a standard recruit training curriculum, meeting national standards, on nights and weekends to accommodate the schedule of firefighters in rural areas.
