The investigation into the Sunday morning crash that killed Taylor DeLuca of Groton and Richard Mitchell of Dunstable is “Ongoing. No charges have been filed,” according to Stephanie Guyotte, a spokesperson for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. She said that investigators from Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone’s office are working with Littleton and state police to determine the cause of the accident on State Route 119 in Littleton in which a black Ford pickup truck went off the pavement near Gilson Road and hit a utility pole hard enough to snap the pole into three pieces before rolling and ejecting its two passengers.

Both passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 5:15 a.m. The driver of the truck has not been identified yet; he was treated and released from Lowell General Hospital on Sunday. Both victims were 21 years old and both graduated from Groton-Dunstable Regional High School in 2009.

Police have said that:

  • Speed was likely a contributing factor to the accident and its severity.
  • It appears that neither DeLuca nor Mitchell was wearing a seat belt.
  • Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor.

Guyotte declined to estimate on how long the investigation may take.
