Farm Fresh
The music this week will be Dick Baummer, a returning favorite and an excellent guitar player and singer. If you’d like to sit and listen, bring a blanket and enjoy the grassy hillside or borrow a chair from the barn. Special thanks to the Groton Trust Funds for sponsoring the weekly musicians.
Governor Deval Patrick proclaimed this week to be Farmers Market Week in Massachusetts; there are now 250 official markets in the Commonwealth, a huge increase over previous years, and a statement on how much customers want to eat locally, know their farmer, and have more knowledge and connection with what they eat.
Winter markets are gaining in popularity and typically offer more prepared foods, but also some greenhouse products. How much interest is there in Groton for a winter market? The Thanksgiving Market at the Williams Barn, held the Saturday before Thanksgiving with gift vendors as well as food vendors, has had significant growth over its four years. The unheated Williams Barn may not work as a winter location, but there are other potential venues in town such as the Grange or Legion Hall that might be fine for a monthly market during the winter months. I would love a winter market in Groton.
