Modifying a previous announcement that the bridge that carries State Route 111 over State Route 2 in Harvard, would close for two months, Michael Verseckes, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced this afternoon that DOR engineers had worked out a way to keep the bridge open to traffic with lane restrictions in place while repairs are made over the next few months.

Structural engineers are looking at the bridge, and the DOT expects to replace steel in the bridge structure, the spokesman said. Details were not available though, because the DOT is still looking at how much the concrete and steel bridge, built in the 1950s, has degraded.

Alternate routes through Devens to the Jackson Road intersection, or through Littleton were suggested as alternatives to residents who want to avoid potential traffic backups.
