NORTHWOOD, NH — Elsie (Brown) Reid, 95, of Northwood, NH and formerly of West Groton, died at her residence on September 3, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was born in Dracut, MA on March 23, 1916, daughter of the late William and Laura (Hall) Brown. She was the wife of the late Lawrence W. Reid, who died in 1993. She grew up in Tyngsboro, attended the Winslow School, and graduated from Lowell High School. She worked as a maid for the Churchill Family of Churchill Manufacturing of Lowell.
After her marriage in 1937, Elsie and her husband moved to West Groton where she lived for 70 years. She worked for the Cargill family and as a proofreader for New England Business Services in Townsend. In 2006, she moved to New Hampshire and spent winters in Delaware.
Elsie and her husband were foster parents to more than 50 children over the years. She was a member of the Groton Grange, National Grange, and a communicant of St. James Parish of West Groton. She was also a member of a snowmobile club and enjoyed square dancing, knitting, crocheting, baking, and swimming. She especially enjoyed her family and watching her many grandchildren grow up at the lake.
Mrs. Reid is survived by two sons, William B. and Charlotte Reid, and Richard A. Reid, both of Delaware; and two daughters, Janet E. Thoren of Northwood, NH, with whom she made her home, and Margaret E. Wyman of Delaware. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and close friends. She was the mother of the late James L. Reid, who died in 1970. She was predeceased by her sisters and a brother.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School St. in Groton, MA on Saturday, September 10, from 9-11 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., then burial at Groton Cemetery. Flowers may be omitted and contributions may be made in her memory to your local chapter of the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
